You might say that I had the typical middle class suburban upbringing. I was born in Columbus, Ohio and my older sister and I were raised in Westerville Ohio by our parents (both Teachers). It was during this upbringing that I learned that you never get something for nothing, and very often there is a close connection between hard work and reward. Always an enterprising youth I mowed lawns, shoveled snow and even picked up the paper route for my friends when they were out of town. In 4th grade I sold sodas at the home Ohio State football games. I would work Ohio State football games all the way through high school slowly moving into positions of greater responsibility over the years. My favorite activities were playing sports (baseball and football), reading comic books…and exploring this fascinating new technology called the computer! As a teenager I would continue with my interest in sports, but also was involved in many aspects of the performing arts in middle school and high school.
College and Early Career:
Deciding to flee the nest I moved to Arizona and attended Glendale Community College for the first two years of college.
After two years I moved back to Columbus, transferred to The Ohio State University, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing. Throughout college I waited tables 30 hours per week at the Olive Garden while maintaining a full academic schedule. Balancing work and school taught me several valuable lessons related to fiscal responsibility, time management and prioritization.
Upon graduation I packed as much as I could into my little Geo Storm and moved to California to look for work. Found an apartment in Union City and after a few months of searching accepted a Sales Representative position with Friden Alcatel in Hayward. In 1992 I joined Johnson & Johnson’s LifeScan Division in Milpitas as a Client Services and Sales Support Representative. Having promoted into a managerial role with LifeScan I decided to attend Santa Clara University in the evenings. Two years later I graduated with an MBA degree with an emphasis on business marketing.
In the summer of 1992 I was living in Newark, and I met the most beautiful and incredible woman (Jessica) who would become my wife. I fell in love instantly, but she needed a bit more time on the matter…she’s a smart lady. So after several years of courtship and persistence on my part we were married in 1996. I truly don’t deserve her, but am so blessed to have her by my side as we journey through life (over 20 years already).
We were living in a 1 bedroom apartment in Fremont when we decided that we wanted to start a family. This prompted a move to Pleasanton. In 1999 we welcomed our daughter Adelaide into the world and we were suddenly a family!
Her brother Tristan was born in 2002, and Spencer followed in 2004.
These three keep Jessica and me on our toes, and it’s never a dull moment in the St. John house! However, I can’t feel anything other than being incredibly blessed.
Much of my career has been dedicated to improving the lives of people through medical innovation. I’ve worked for 3 companies that serve the diabetes community (LifeScan, TheraSense (now Abbott Diabetes Care) and Tethys Bioscience. Other stops included HemoSense (acquired by Alere for $167M) (warfarin therapy), Ekso Bionics (bionic robot assisted spinal cord and stroke rehabilitation and personal mobility), and Acclarent – J&J (chronic sinusitis). It is rewarding that millions of people lead healthier lives due to these companies and in some small part my contributions. I built a reputation for being customer focused and pragmatic in my approach. I’d much rather find solutions than bicker about the problems. As your representative for CA15 in Congress I’ll seek to find solutions that get Washington working again. The partisan gridlock and party-line gamesmanship needs to end. I’ll be a force for positive change.
